I’ve really been into this thing called ‘on-the-job training’ as a nurse. It’s akin to mentoring to learn the basics. It’s all revolves around the seasoned professionals orienting new employees. That has been extremely beneficial for my professional development. Time passes and I’ve faced numerous inquiries and obstacles. They’ve really influenced my approach to this whole ‘on-the-job training’ thing.

So, what’s this ‘second hand nursing’ all about?

You know, ‘advisorship program’ is like having a supportive partnership. More experienced nurses help out the inexperiencedcomers. It not only makes care for patients better but also keeps the collective learning and getting better.

In my perspective, it’s been excellent. It cuts down on mistakes, helps us communicate more effectively, and just makes everyone have a better sense of well-being about their jobs. Like, when I was inexperienced, having a advisor was a big deal. It made me feel more confident and helped me handle challenging situations.

How do we actually set up this ‘second hand nursing’ stuff in a hospital or clinic?

You’ve got to plan it out really well in a healthcare place. You need to find good advisor-mentee pairs, define objectives, and make sure everyone’s open communication and learning. One approach I have taken is to organize frequent training meetings and workshops that concentrate on particular fields of nursing skills, providing both advisors and mentees with the knowledge and skills they need to perform at a high level.

So, I’ve establish this program where we do ‘recycled nursing’, and it’s been excellent. It’s better for the individuals and everyone loves their workplace happier. We’ve been building this esprit de corps and educational environment. It’s made our work more upbeat and efficient.

But there are challenges with ‘second hand nursing’, too.

Even though it’s excellent, there are some obstacles to overcome. The major challenge is finding the right guide and protégé. They’ve got to coordinate and communicate well. And another thing is making sure everyone’s got the resources and support they need to ensure success.

To get past these challenges, I’ve had to be proactive and alter the approach. So, I establish a pairing initiative where we look at what both the guides and protégés preference. It supports make sure they’re a suitable pair. And I’ve been pushing for further education for guides to support them be the top guides they can be.

What about the benefits for patients?

It’s not just about the nurses. Patients also get a lot out of it. It facilitates reduce mistakes, enhances interaction, and maintains everyone education. The aforementioned adds up to better treatment and outcomes for patients. In my practice, I’ve observed it firsthand. It’s actually assisted patients get better quicker, spend shorter duration in the hospital, and be satisfied.

So, my journey with ‘second hand nursing’ has been a real blend. It’s been challenging but also actually fulfilling.
